Reynolda House and the Art of Collaboration

By Sarah R. Smith, Director of Marketing and Communications | @SarahatReynolda

As with most exhibitions the Museum hosts, The Art of Seating: Two Hundred Years of American Design has inspired a number of collaborative programs, exhibits, and events throughout the Piedmont Triad.

First, and fittingly for The Art of Seating, Reynolda House has worked closely with partners in High Point, the “home furnishings capital of the world,” to make connections between the exhibition and the furniture industry. On August 18, the same week of the opening of The Art of Seating at Reynolda House, High Point University’s Sechrest Gallery opens High Point University Explores the Art of Seating, an exhibition of innovative student and faculty chair designs. The exhibit will provide students in the School of Art & Design opportunities to combine artistic forms with emerging technologies to bring an original idea to prototyping, manufacturing, and global marketing. Furnishings and product designers consider limited resources, material life cycles, aesthetics and product placement to attract a targeted customer. The university exhibition will provide a historical and aesthetic foundation for displaying, critiquing, and contextualizing the work of faculty and student designers. An example of one of the chairs on view in the exhibit is below.

Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 1-5 p.m.

Later this fall on November 7, Piedmont Craftsmen opens "The Craft of the Chair," an exhibit by members of Piedmont Craftsmen interpreting seating in stunning ways. Below is an example of one of the works from the exhibit. "The Craft of the Chair" opens with a reception on Friday, November 7, during the Downtown Arts District Association Gallery Hop on Trade Street in downtown Winston-Salem.
