The
City in Motion
In “The City
in Motion,” we revisit the uniquely American Ashcan School version
of urban subject matter and the ways in which it differs from impressionist
paintings of cities, but now with the films that both draw on, and
influence, the changing artistic styles. The filmmakers and painters
discussed in this section were also shaped by the dominant role played
by the American newspaper in the last decade of the nineteenth century
and the early years of the twentieth.
