The City in Motion    

In “The City in Motion,” we revisit the uniquely American Ashcan School version of urban subject matter and the ways in which it differs from impressionist paintings of cities, but now with the films that both draw on, and influence, the changing artistic styles. The filmmakers and painters discussed in this section were also shaped by the dominant role played by the American newspaper in the last decade of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth.
